In emotionally charged messages, draft your reactive response first in a private document, then wait 10 minutes before composing the actual message, using the comparison between versions as data about emotional distortion.
Why This Is a Rule
Suppressing a reactive response doesn't work — the emotional energy has to go somewhere. If you try to compose a measured response while still activated, the emotion leaks through in word choice, tone, and passive-aggressive framing that you can't detect from inside the emotional state.
This rule works with the emotion instead of against it. Draft the reactive version first — the uncensored, unfiltered response you actually want to send. Write it in a private document (never in the reply field). This venting draft serves two purposes: it discharges the emotional pressure, and it creates an artifact you can study.
After 10 minutes — enough time for the acute emotional activation to subside — compose the real message fresh. Don't edit the reactive draft; write from scratch. Then compare the two versions. The delta between them is a precise measurement of how much the emotion was distorting your message. Over time, this comparison trains you to recognize your specific distortion patterns: do you overstate severity? Assign blame? Become artificially agreeable? The data is in the delta.
When This Fires
- Replying to an email or message that made you angry, defensive, or anxious
- Responding to criticism in writing (code review comments, feedback threads)
- Drafting a message you've already rewritten twice because it "doesn't sound right"
- Any written response where you notice physical activation (tight chest, clenched jaw, heat)
Common Failure Mode
Editing the reactive draft instead of writing fresh. When you edit, the emotional frame persists — you're polishing anger rather than composing from a calmer state. The sentences may become more professional, but the structure, emphasis, and implicit accusations carry forward from the reactive version. Writing fresh after 10 minutes produces a fundamentally different message, not a sanitized version of the same one.
The Protocol
(1) Open a private document (not the reply field). (2) Write your unfiltered reactive response — everything you want to say. (3) Close the document. Set a 10-minute timer. Do something else. (4) After 10 minutes, open the actual reply and compose from scratch. Do not look at the reactive draft. (5) Optionally, compare the two versions afterward. The differences teach you where and how emotion distorts your communication.
