Reporting friction is a hidden dependency in every accountability system: the accountability only works if you report, and you only report if reporting is effortless. A reporting requirement that takes 5 minutes and a paragraph of explanation will decay within 2-3 weeks as the cognitive cost of reporting begins to outweigh the motivational benefit of accountability.
The zero-effort threshold is operationalized by the examples: a single emoji (✅ or ❌), a checkbox in a shared spreadsheet, or a photo of the completed action. Each requires less than 10 seconds and zero compositional effort. You don't need to think about what to write, how to frame it, or whether your explanation sounds good. You just check a box or send a symbol.
This is the same principle as Start every new agent at under two minutes with zero preparation — automaticity requires low activation energy first (minimal viable agents) applied to the reporting layer: reduce the reporting action to its absolute minimum to ensure it fires reliably. Common Failure Mode

Now you need two agents to fire: the behavior itself and the reporting behavior. Each has its own failure modes, and the compound reliability (both must fire) is lower than either alone. Simplify reporting until it requires zero deliberation.
The Protocol

(2) Choose the lowest-friction format: shared spreadsheet with checkboxes, text thread with ✅/❌, habit-tracking app with one-tap logging, or photo evidence (snap and send). (3) The reporting action must take <10 seconds and require zero written composition. (4) Test: can you report while walking, while tired, while in a rush? If any of these fail → too much friction. Simplify. (5) If the accountability partner wants more detail, schedule a separate weekly debrief. Daily reporting is for binary tracking; weekly debrief is for reflection. Don't merge them.
